Tom Van Peer
City carillonist Lokeren, improvisation teacher Royal Carillon School Mechelen
Tom Van Peer (°1975) is city carillonneur of Lokeren for already more than 20 years.
He studied piano at the International Jazz Studio in Antwerp and carillon at the Royal Carillon School 'Jef Denyn' in Mechelen.
In 1998 he received his laureate diploma and in the same year he became first laureate of the International Carillon Competition Queen Fabiola. He also won the SABAM prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary Belgian work.
He has been a member of the jury at several editions of the Fabiola Competition and is an avid interpreter of jazz on the carillon. His improvisations in various styles testify to his creativity with music.
Since 2012, he has been the teacher of improvisation at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen. In 2020, he won the Lion-Francout Prize, a prize awarded annually to a blind person who, through his courage and activities, surpasses the objections of his handicap.
